Amethyst is being stalked. Odd gifts appear on her doorstep. A black Mustang lurks in front of her house. But when the car—minus a driver—snatches her off her Albuquerque street, Amethyst is plunged into a hidden world of magic where no one can be trusted and nobody is quite what they seem.

As she struggles to hold on to her normal life, an ancient spirit pursues her, warning of magic grown toxic and dangerously unstable by the disappearance of wizards. A homeless man mumbles about a predator that drains wizards of power, leaving behind tormented shadows. Amethyst had better learn to use her untested wizardry before the predator catches up to her—if the magic doesn’t explode and destroy the world first.

Author’s Note

Okay, I admit it: I’m one of those people who names their cars. And besides, I just love cars, the sportier and more aggressive, the better. I put all my favorite things in this book: cars, pit bulls, stained glass, New Mexico, and the California coast.

When Perry’s powers as an earth sorceress finally come just before her nineteenth birthday, she’s thrilled. Then comes the bad news. Her powers are a little extreme. Wherever she goes, everything grows like crazy. That’s awkward enough, but it gets worse when people try to ravish each other when she walks by.

But when Perry meets Hadis, the Lord of Death, things go downhill. Way downhill. She finds Hadis plenty attractive, but when a spiteful spell drives him to kidnap her, she decides that being dragged to his bleak, barren realm isn’t exactly a recipe for romance.

Now the captive of a powerful sorcerer blinded by a love spell, Perry’s only hope of escape is to discover what exiles Hadis to his terrible domain—and if she wants the spell to be broken after all.

Author’s Notes

The myth of Persephone and Hades has always been my favorite. I don’t know why– maybe something to do with being carried off by a tall, dark stranger? But once the myth leaves Persephone to follow Demeter, I lose interest. I don’t care about Mom’s search for her daughter. I want to know what’s going on in the Underworld with Persephone! When the myth eventually gets back to Persephone, she’s pining and refusing to eat. So yeah, maybe they got off to a bad start, but since Persephone and Hades have one of the few faithful marriages in Greek myth, I figured there must be something between them.

In my mind, this was a Beauty and the Beast story. Once Persephone/Perry learns to see beyond Hades’ grim exterior, she finds something to cherish.
